The most famous tough watch in the world began with a broken one.
In 1981, Casio engineer Kikuo Ibe dropped a mechanical watch his father had given him, and it shattered. He set out to build a watch that would not break. Two years and more than 200 prototypes later, the G-Shock was born.
The quick answer
The Casio G-Shock launched in April 1983 as the DW-5000C. Its quartz module “floats” inside a hollow, cushioned case, so the outer layers absorb a blow before it reaches the electronics. Ibe’s goal, which he called “Triple 10”, was a watch that could survive a 10-metre fall, resist 10 bar of water pressure and run for 10 years on one battery.
The Triple 10 brief
Ibe set up a group called Project Team Tough. Most accounts based on Casio’s history say it had three members, while one Japanese profile of Ibe describes an eight-member unit.
Target |
Meaning |
10-metre drop |
Survives a fall from about three storeys |
10 bar |
Pressure equal to 100 metres of water |
10-year battery |
One battery lasts a decade |
Ibe tested prototypes by dropping them from a third-floor bathroom window. Wrapping the module in rubber kept failing. After more than 100 test models, he reportedly considered leaving Casio.
The rubber ball moment
In a park, Ibe watched a child bouncing a rubber ball. He noticed that the centre of the ball barely felt the impact. So instead of armouring the module, he decided to suspend it inside the case, with layered cushioning around it and only a few points of contact.
How it works
Think of a phone wrapped in bubble wrap inside a box: the box dents, but the phone survives. A G-Shock works the same way:
- An outer resin shell and bezel take the hit.
- Cushioning sits between the case and the module.
- The module touches the case at only a few points.
Some histories count five protective layers and others ten, depending on what is counted. Ibe has said the “G” stands for the gravitational shock of a fall.

Master of G is Casio’s family of watches for specific environments: Frogman for the sea, Mudmaster and Rangeman for land, Gravitymaster for the air. MR-G separates its metal bezel from the case with cushioning, much like a car bumper. Carbon Core Guard is a case made of carbon-fibre-reinforced resin.
What it means for you in India
- Heat and dust: resin does not corrode. Rinse the watch after heavy sweat or a sea swim.
- Monsoon and swimming: most models are rated to 20 bar (200 m). Only the Frogman is a certified diver.
- Solar charging: Tough Solar models charge easily in Indian daylight, but they can run down if left in a dark drawer.
- Radio time-sync: “Multiband 6” relies on transmitters in Japan, China, the US, the UK and Germany, so it does not work in India. Bluetooth sync from your phone is more useful here.
- Battery changes: on non-solar models, have the battery changed by someone who can reseal the case.
Where Titan fits
The G-Shock arrived as India was moving to quartz. Titan Watches Limited was founded in 1984 as a joint venture between the Tata Group and TIDCO in Hosur, and its first quartz watches reached buyers in 1987. Both stories show how quartz made the everyday watch accurate and affordable.
Common mistakes and myths
- “G-Shocks are indestructible.” They are shock-resistant, not immune.
- “Every G-Shock is a dive watch.” Only the Frogman is ISO 6425 certified.
- “All G-Shocks are digital.” Analog-digital and full-metal models are a big part of the range.
- “Radio sync works in India.” Use Bluetooth instead.
- “G-Shock is a separate company.” It is a Casio brand.
Key takeaway
A G-Shock suspends its module and absorbs shocks in layers. Choose by what you need it for: the square or GA-2100 for daily wear, the Frogman for diving, the Mudmaster or Rangeman for the outdoors, MR-G for metal. In India, prioritise solar charging and Bluetooth.
